DevOps
Docker and containers on Microsoft Azure
Build containerised applications and deploy them on Azure services: Container Registry, Container Instances, Container Apps, App Service and AKS. Security and production good practice.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- build and optimise images from a Dockerfile
- publish and manage images in Azure Container Registry
- deploy a containerised application on the right Azure service
- choose between ACI, Container Apps, App Service and AKS
- secure containers: managed identities, Key Vault, vulnerability scanning
- automate deployment through CI/CD and monitor in production
Who it's for: developers, systems administrators and DevOps engineers.
Prerequisites: the Linux command line, a grounding in networking, first steps in the Azure portal.
Day 1 — Fundamentals and images
- Containers versus virtual machines, Docker architecture, lifecycle
- anatomy of an image, Dockerfile, multi-stage builds and optimisation
- Azure Container Registry: authentication, publishing, ACR Tasks, retention
Labs
- first container
- Dockerfile and image optimisation
- ACR registry and publishing
Day 2 — Networking, data and Azure services
- Docker networking and port publishing
- volumes, persistence and mounting Azure Files
- Docker Compose for multi-service applications
- Choosing the right Azure service — ACI for one-off processing, Container Apps for microservices that scale to zero, App Service for Containers for web applications, AKS for complex architectures; decision grid and migration paths
Labs
- multi-service application with Compose
- deployment on ACI and on Container Apps
- three application cases to arbitrate and deploy
Day 3 — Security, CI/CD and operations
- Non-privileged user and image hardening
- managed identities and secrets in Azure Key Vault
- vulnerability scanning with Defender for Containers
- CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions or Azure Pipelines
- monitoring through Log Analytics and Azure Monitor, health probes, cost tracking
- troubleshooting common incidents
Labs
- hardening and externalising secrets
- full pipeline through to Container Apps
- guided troubleshooting of three incidents
